Scumbag mitochondrion. Through radicals do we live and die.
Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of the cell. Without them, multicellular life simply wouldn’t have enough energy to live. However, by the very same processes that provide us with energy to exist, mitochondria also produce high energy radicals which damage the cell and DNA, contributing to ageing, cell degeneration and even cancer. They can also initiate cell suicide (apoptosis).
